Munich Airport - The Best in Europe!

Munich Airport (code: MUC / EDDM) can be found in Southern Germany at the heart of Europe sporting two runways which see around 400,000 aircraft movements each year.

The passenger terminals at Munich are divided in to Terminal 1 (Halls A to F) and Terminal 2 (Halls G & H) which together process a significant 34 million passengers a year.

Munich International Airport has been voted Best Airport in Europe in the 2008 Skytrax World Airport Awards. The awards are based on 8 million surveys worldwide from unbiased passenger opinions, and measures travellers' experiences of 39 airport service topics, such as check-in, transfers, airport cleanliness, signage, shopping, WiFi internet, onward connections, and so on.

Munich Airport (in German; “Flughafen München”) carries the official name “Franz Josef Strauss Airport” in honour of a local-born politician and is Germany’s second busiest airport in terms of passenger numbers after Frankfurt International Airport, which handles some 20 million more passengers than Munich.

Lufthansa has an intense presence at this hub along with other members of the Star Alliance. However it is not considered a “fortress hub” in the sense of majority domination, because other popular airlines operate from Munich including:

  • Aeroflot,
  • Air France,
  • airberlin,
  • Alitalia,
  • British Airways,
  • Czech Airlines,
  • Delta Air Lines,
  • easyJet,
  • Emirates,
  • Etihad Airways,
  • Finnair,
  • Germanwings,
  • Hamburg International,
  • KLM,
  • Korean Air,
  • LTU International,
  • Niki,
  • Royal Jordanian,
  • Tunisair.

Flughafen München GmbH operates the airport and unusually shares part-ownership of Terminal 2 operation with the prevalent airline Lufthansa. The airport operator plans to add a third runway at Munich, but has not received much support from the nearby residents, which is understandable since 500 locals have already been displaced by construction of the initial facility in 1980.
